Business Gas FAQs

Most UK businesses pay between 6.5p and 9p per kWh for gas in 2026, plus a standing charge. The more gas you use, the lower your business gas prices per kWh tend to be.

Yearly gas useAverage rate
Under 25,000 kWh~8.7p/kWh
25,000 – 100,000 kWh~8p/kWh
100,000 – 500,000 kWh~7.4p/kWh
500,000 kWh+ (daily metered)~6.8p/kWh

These are average business gas prices in the UK for September 2026, not quotes. Your own price depends on how much gas you use, where you are, your meter type and your credit history. For a full breakdown of gas and electricity, read our business energy comparison guide.

To compare business gas prices, you’ll need three things from your bill: your MPRN (a 6 to 10-digit meter number), your yearly gas usage in kWh and your contract end date. Then compare these four things side by side:

  • The unit rate (p/kWh)
  • The standing charge (p/day)
  • How long the contract lasts
  • Whether all charges are fixed, or some can change during the contract

To work out the real cost of each quote, use this sum: (unit rate × yearly kWh) + (standing charge × 365). The lowest total wins, not the lowest unit rate. Not sure what you pay now? Our free UMW Health Check confirms your current rates and contract dates before you compare business gas charges.

The cheapest business gas prices in the UK start from around 5.9p to 7.5p per kWh on a fixed deal in 2026, depending on how much gas you use. Large, daily metered sites get the lowest rates, and small businesses pay a little more.

No single supplier is cheapest for everyone. Each supplier prices differently depending on your location, your usage and your type of business, which is why a proper commercial gas comparison matters. Northern Gas and Power works with more than 40 business energy suppliers, and we compare 30+ suppliers to find the best business gas rates in the UK for you.

Small business gas prices are around 8.7p per kWh in 2026, with a standing chargeAs a guide, the average gas bill for a small business in the UK using 15,000 kWh a year works out at about £1,445 before tax: £1,305 for the gas and £139 for the standing charge. Add 5% VAT and it comes to roughly £1,515 a year. Small users like this usually pay the reduced 5% VAT rate and no Climate Change Levy (see the tax question below).

If your business uses no more than 293,000 kWh of gas a year, it counts as a microbusiness. That gives you extra Ofgem protections, including no need to give notice before you switch. To bring your usage down too, see our tips on how to reduce business energy consumption.

Commercial gas prices depend on five main things:

  • The wholesale market. This is the biggest factor. Prices move with supply from Norway, shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG), storage levels and the weather, especially in winter.
  • How much gas you use. Bigger users get lower unit rates.
  • Where you are. Network charges vary by region, so the cost of commercial gas changes across the UK.
  • Your contract. The length of the deal, and when you fix it, both affect the price.
  • Taxes and charges. VAT and the Climate Change Levy are added on top.

Want to understand the options? SEFE Energy, one of the UK’s largest business gas suppliers, explains the main contract types in plain English in its guide.

On your bill, one unit of gas is one kilowatt hour (kWh), so commercial gas prices per unit are simply the price per kWh, around 6.5p to 9p in 2026.

Your meter doesn’t measure kWh, though. It measures the volume of gas in cubic metres (m³), or in hundreds of cubic feet on older imperial meters. Your supplier converts it like this:

kWh = m³ × 1.02264 × calorific value ÷ 3.6

The calorific value is shown on your bill and is usually around 39 to 40. For example, 100 m³ of gas with a calorific value of 39.5 comes to about 1,122 kWh. On an imperial meter, multiply the reading by 2.83 first to convert it to cubic metres.

Yes, most businesses pay 20% VAT and the Climate Change Levy (CCL) on their gas, and both add to your business gas costs. The CCL is 0.801p per kWh from April 2026, rising to 0.827p per kWh from April 2027 (HMRC).

If your business uses no more than 145 kWh of gas a day (about 4,397 kWh a month), you pay the lower 5% VAT rate and no CCL. Businesses with a Climate Change Agreement get an 89% discount on the CCL for gas in 2026–27. Check your latest bill to see which rates you’re being charged. Our guide to what’s on a utility bill shows where to look.

Your AQ (Annual Quantity) is the estimated amount of gas your meter uses in a year. It’s held on the national gas database and updated as real meter readings come in.

Suppliers use your AQ to price your quote, so it matters. If your AQ is based on estimates and is too high or too low, you could be quoted the wrong price. Sending regular meter readings keeps it accurate. Our free UMW Health Check finds your meter on the national database, checks that it’s sending correct readings and confirms your details before you compare.

The best time is as soon as your renewal window opens. You can usually agree a new deal up to 12 months before your contract ends, and the new price starts the day the old one finishes. Most contracts also have a notice window of one to six months before the end date, so starting early means you’re never rushed.

Many businesses leave it too late. Northern Gas and Power found that close to 46% of businesses never review their options at renewal. Business gas prices today can be different tomorrow, so to keep an eye on the market you can sign up for the free daily energy market report at ngp.co.uk and the SEFE Energy insights newsletter.

If your contract ends and you haven’t agreed a new one, your supplier will move you onto an out-of-contract rate. These rates are usually much higher than a fixed deal. The same thing happens if you move into new premises without a contract. SEFE Energy calls this a “deemed rate”.

The good news is that you can switch straight away, and your supplier can’t block a switch while you’re on a deemed rate. Read our guide on avoiding costly default rates, or get a quote today and we’ll move you onto a better deal.

Let’s get started!
