Compare business electricity prices from more than 30 UK suppliers and fix a rate that suits how your business actually uses power. In 2026, most UK businesses pay between 24p and 30p per kWh, plus a daily standing charge. Competitive fixed deals start nearer 20p to 24p per kWh.

Whether you run a single shop or a multi-site operation, our independent consultants benchmark your current contract, compare commercial electricity prices and tariffs across the market, and manage the switch for you. Business tariffs have no price cap, so the deal you sign decides what you pay.

Business Electricity

Britain’s electricity now comes mainly from wind, gas, nuclear and imports, and coal power ended in 2024. Wholesale gas prices and network charges still drive most of what businesses pay.

Business Gas

Gas prices follow global wholesale markets, and gas still sets the price of much of Britain’s electricity. We track the market so you can fix your business gas rate at the right time.

Business Water

Businesses in England and Scotland can choose their water retailer, yet most never switch. We review your water and wastewater charges and find a better business water deal.

Business Electricity FAQs

Most UK businesses pay between 24p and 30p per kWh for electricity in 2026,. Smaller sites pay at the top of that range and large half-hourly metered sites at the bottom.

Annual usageTypical unit rate
Under 5,000 kWh (micro)~28–30p/kWh
5,000–15,000 kWh (small)~27p/kWh
15,000–50,000 kWh (medium)~25p/kWh
50,000–150,000 kWh (large)~24.5p/kWh
150,000 kWh+ (half-hourly)~24p/kWh

These rates for business electricity are market benchmarks for September 2026, not quotes. Your own rate depends on region, meter type, usage pattern and credit profile. If you also buy gas, see our business gas rates, or read our full business energy comparison guide.

No single supplier is cheapest for every business. Each supplier prices from its own hedging position, cost base and appetite for your sector, so the cheapest supplier for a café in Birmingham may be uncompetitive for a warehouse in Glasgow.

That is why the market is worth comparing in full. Northern Gas and Power works with more than 40 business energy suppliers, and Utility Market Watch compares 30+ suppliers covering more than 90% of the UK business market by customer numbers. The cheapest supplier is the one that wins when your actual usage is quoted across that whole panel.

For most small and medium businesses, the cheapest tariff overall is a competitive fixed-rate contract agreed early in the renewal window. Other contract types can look cheaper on paper, but they carry risk:

  • Fixed : one agreed rate for the whole term, usually one to three years. Best for budget certainty.
  • Pass-through : the energy price is fixed, but network and third-party charges move. A lower starting price, but less certainty.
  • Flexible : energy is bought in tranches over the term. SEFE Energy says this generally suits very large users, typically above 5,000,000 kWh a year.
  • Out-of-contract and deemed rates : never the cheapest. These are defaults you should move off straight away.

A tariff has two parts, so compare on the annual total: (unit rate × annual kWh) + (standing charge × 365). As SEFE Energy puts it, a great deal for a high energy user may not be a good one for a business that uses far less.

To compare business electricity tariffs, gather your last 12 months’ usage in kWh, your MPAN (the 21-digit number on your bill) and your contract end date, then have quotes run across multiple suppliers on the same terms. Compare four things side by side:

  • Unit rate (p/kWh)
  • Standing charge (p/day), which is rising fastest in 2026
  • Contract length
  • Whether third-party charges are fixed or passed through

Not sure what you pay now? Our free UMW Health Check confirms your current rates, contract dates and meter details before you compare, and our guide to what is on a utility bill shows where each figure appears.

Small businesses typically pay 27p to 30p per kWh for electricity in 2026, with standing charges of around 60p to 65p a day. That is the highest in the market, because suppliers price on volume.

Small firms often have the most to gain, and the best small business electricity deals go to firms that compare early in the renewal window. Northern Gas and Power research found 62% of SMEs and microbusinesses describe energy as a significant cost. If your business uses no more than 100,000 kWh of electricity a year, or has fewer than 10 employees and a turnover of no more than €2 million, it counts as a microbusiness. That gives you extra Ofgem protections, including no requirement to give notice before switching and access to the Energy Ombudsman. For free ways to cut usage too, see how to reduce business energy consumption.

British Gas Business and E.ON do not publish one fixed price list for business electricity. Like most suppliers, they quote each business individually, based on usage, location, meter type and credit profile. Their rates fall within the same 2026 market range of roughly 22p to 30p per kWh.

The only way to know whether a British Gas, E.ON, EDF or ScottishPower quote is competitive is to set it against the rest of the market. We quote all four alongside our wider panel, so you can see where each one sits for your business.

Your standing charge rose mainly because TNUoS transmission network charges went up by a confirmed 64% from April 2026. The residual element moved from about £15.70/MWh to £25.70/MWh (EDF), and it is charged per site per day. That is why cutting usage alone cannot bring the bill back down.

The Climate Change Levy also rose to 0.801p per kWh in April 2026 and goes up to 0.827p in April 2027 (HMRC). Non-commodity costs such as these now make up around 64% of a typical business electricity bill. Read more in what affects your business electricity rate.

Compare as soon as your renewal window opens. That can be up to 12 months before your contract ends, and the new rate starts the day the old one expires. Most contracts also have a termination window one to six months before the end date, so starting early protects you from an automatic rollover.

Many businesses leave it too late. Northern Gas and Power reports that close to 46% of businesses never review their options at renewal. To follow the market in the meantime, you can sign up to NGP’s free daily energy market report at ngp.co.uk and the SEFE Energy insights newsletter.

If your contract ends with nothing new agreed, your supplier moves you onto out-of-contract or deemed rates. These are set by the supplier and usually cost well above a negotiated fixed deal. There is no price cap for businesses.

The upside is that you can switch straight away, and your supplier cannot object to a switch while you are on deemed rates. Our guide on avoiding costly default rates explains what to do next. You can also request a quote today.

A business electricity switch usually takes four to eight weeks from signing, and around 15 days at the fastest (SEFE Energy). Your supply is never interrupted, no engineer visits, and the switch itself is free.

Business contracts have no cooling-off period, so check every figure before you sign. You submit a meter reading on switch day and settle a final bill with your old supplier. Our account managers handle the rest. For the full process, see how to switch business energy supplier.

Let’s get started!
