We Work With Leading Business Water Retailers
Yes, if your business is in England or Scotland. In England, around 1.2 million businesses have been able to choose their water retailer since April 2017, with no minimum usage. In Scotland, businesses have been able to switch since 2008.
Wales is different. Only businesses using more than 50 megalitres of water a year (50 million litres) can switch, and only for their water supply, not wastewater. Most Welsh businesses stay with their regional water company.
Business water rates went up on 1 April 2026 in every region. The average rise ranged from 2.8% to 17.1% in England, depending on your regional wholesaler, and Scottish Water increased measured charges by 8.67%. These are the average wholesale rises for 2026/27 (Water Plus):
| Regional wholesaler | Average rise | Regional wholesaler | Average rise |
|---|---|---|---|
| South West Water | 17.1% | SES Water | 7.7% |
| Bristol Water | 15.7% | Yorkshire Water | 6.4% |
| South East Water | 12.6% | Northumbrian Water | 6.3% |
| United Utilities | 12.1% | Southern Water | 5.7% |
| Affinity Water | 11.7% | Severn Trent Water | 4.8% |
| Anglian Water | 11.3% | Wessex Water | 4.7% |
| Scottish Water (measured) | 8.67% | Portsmouth Water | 4.3% |
| Thames Water | 2.8% | South Staffs Water | 4.0% |
Commercial water rates are set by region, so your own increase depends on where you are, how much water you use and the size of your meter. The rises help fund a record £104 billion investment in the water network between 2025 and 2030.
Your wholesaler is the regional water company that owns the pipes, supplies clean water, takes away wastewater and looks after the network and meters. You can’t change your wholesaler.
Your retailer is the company that reads your meter, sends your bills and handles customer service. This is the part you can switch. When you change retailer, your water still comes from the same pipes, so nothing changes on site.
To compare business water suppliers, you’ll need a recent water bill showing:
- Your SPID (Supply Point ID), which identifies your water and wastewater supply
- Your meter serial number
- Your yearly water usage in cubic metres (m³)
- Your current retailer and any contract end odate
Then compare the retail charges, the contract length and the service you’ll get, such as billing accuracy and leak support. Not sure where to find these details? Our guide to what’s on a utility bill shows you where to look, or send us your bill and we’ll do it for you.
How much you save depends on how much you use, as well as where the current market is at, we will provide a price analysis and breakdown of exactly how much you would save.
Savings from switching water retailer are usually smaller than with gas or electricity, and we’d rather be honest about that. Most of your bill is made up of wholesale charges, which are the same whichever retailer you choose. The saving comes from the retailer’s part of the bill.
The bigger savings usually come from fixing the bill itself: correcting estimated readings, claiming drainage rebates and finding leaks. Our free UMW Health Check checks your meters, rates and bills, so we can show you where the real savings are.
Switching business water supplier usually takes between 6 and 20 working days once your new retailer applies. Allow about a month from start to finish, including quotes and paperwork.
Your water won’t be cut off, no engineer needs to visit, and the company that physically supplies your water stays the same. If you’re not in a fixed contract, you can switch at any time. Take a photo of your meter reading on switch day in case of any billing questions later.
A business water bill is usually made up of these charges:
- Fresh water. A standing charge, plus a charge for each cubic metre (m³) you use.
- Wastewater. For taking away used water through the sewer. This is often worked out as a share of the water you use.
- Surface water drainage. For rainwater that runs off your roof and car park into the public sewer.
- Highway drainage. For rainwater draining from public roads.
- Trade effluent. Only if you send trade waste, such as cleaning or process water, into the sewer.
A surface water drainage rebate is money back, plus lower bills in future, if rainwater from your site doesn’t go into the public sewer. For example, your rainwater might drain into a soakaway, a pond or a nearby stream instead. Many businesses pay this charge without needing to.
There’s a similar allowance for wastewater. If a lot of the water you use doesn’t go back down the drain, for example because it goes into your products or evaporates, you may be able to pay less for wastewater. We’ll check whether either applies to you.
You can reduce your business water bill by checking your bills, fixing leaks and using less water. The quickest wins are:
- Submit real meter readings so you’re not billed on estimates
- Fix dripping taps and running toilets, which can waste thousands of litres a year
- Fit water-saving taps, showers and toilet flushes
- Check whether you qualify for a surface water drainage rebate
- Compare water retailers and move off a default tariff
